Following months of gruelling training and badgering friends, family, colleagues and clients for sponsorship money, on 22nd September, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Talybont Challenge was finally upon us.
We arrived in the beautiful Talybont Valley at 6am, armed with waterproof outfits and enough energy bars to feed a small army. Following a rather tough 4 hour hike around the Brecon Beacons we made it back to base for a quick refuel before the team embarked on its ill-fated bike ride.
A combination of frequent rests and team morale kept us going for the arduous 10 kilometre uphill climb alongside Talybont Reservoir. Unfortunately, the prospect of a speedy downhill run combined with wet weather and sharp bends meant that team member Erin fell from her bike into a rather mean looking hedge. Whilst waiting for an ambulance the team gladly refuelled on tea and scones in preparation for the rest of the 25 kilometre journey.
After our short rest, the rest of the team continued on, happy in our steely determination to complete the challenge, until we reached a rather ambiguous road marking that would eventually lead us 10 miles off course. With darkness and a sense of impending doom setting upon us we finally gave up the ghost and called for a lift back to base. After a swift response from the Guide Dogs team we arrived back just in time to collect our trophy.
We may not have stuck to the route but we did cover enough ground to officially complete the challenge raising a whopping 3500 pounds for a great cause. A big thank you to all of you who sponsored us and fear not, we will be returning next year - armed with a GPS of course.
